What is the Moonward Book Club

Every month, participating Moonward team members pick a book that relates to any challenges or opportunities that we are facing at the time. Then we meet up as a team and discuss any takeaways we took from the book, our favourite quotes and a quick synopsis.

Why Moonward does a Book Club

We don’t need to go too deep into this. Reading is good for you.

Books can be a therapist, a mentor, a friend, a consul, a challenger.

Moonward has implemented many of the ideas that have been discussed in the books we have read, collectively it has made the team richer. We’ve rolled out new processes, adjusted our language to our clients and each other,

And as discussed in one of our previous blogs, which you can read here, good reading and writing is essential to being a great developer and designer at Moonward.

Surrounded by Idiots

Don’t be put off by the name, we are not literally surrounded by idiots. More so, we are surrounded by different personality types that clash with our own personality - making it feel like we are the only sane one, and everyone else is an idiot. Surrounded by Idiots gives a simple structure for people to understand and importantly work together.

Pour your heart into it

Former CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, chronicles the rise and formation of the local coffee shop great. Schlutz talks about how his passion and vision drove him to create one of the largest drink chains on the planet. Pour Your Heart Into It is an extremely wholesome read, and ironically feels like sitting down with a friend for a cup of coffee.

Greenlights

The books title refers to the metaphor of "Greenlights" as moments in life where things flow smoothly, offering a go-ahead to keep moving forward. McConaughey reflects on his experiences, both the highs and lows, finding that obstacles are often opportunities in disguise.

We would recommend you consume this content as an audiobook, it is read by Matthew McConaughey in his husky southern accent.

The Art of Winning

If you like Rugby Union, the name Dan Carter is sure to come up as one of your top picks for number 10 on your fantasy team. All Black great Dan Carter gives a unique insight into his own ten lessons for leadership, backed by his long and legendary career in professional sports. The Art of Winning has a lot of good and practical quotes!

Here is a photo of some of the team at Moonward attending an event with Dan Carter.

Grit

Angela Duckworth argues that success is more often a result of Grit – the combination of sustained effort and resilience – than natural ability. Through research and real-life examples, she shows that the ability to persist through challenges, stay focused on long-term goals, and maintain determination over time is what leads to achievement.

Crucial Conversations

No one feels natural during high stakes conversations. This book by Joseph Green helps teach its readers to be persuasive rather than abrasive and get your point across in a succinct way, when others blow up and go flat. As Moonward is a 100% in house team, Crucial Conversations both internally and externally is a vital part of our offering. We value our team being able to communicate freely.

Choose your enemies wisely

Patrick Bet-David delivers a compelling exploration of how the enemies we choose, or those who oppose us, can shape our lives and business in unexpectedly positive ways. Enemies can provide a platform for us grow, challenge ourselves and ultimately succeed. Bet-David details throughout Choose Your Enemies Wisely shows us how to harness the power of your adversaries to propel you forward.

Scrum: The art of doing twice the work in half the time

This book needs no introduction. As an agile development team that uses the Scrum methodology and framework to deliver software products, this book is like our holy book. At Moonward we have a Scrum Master, Product Owners and the fallout of the Development and Design team detailed in this book. Scrum is a widely accepted practice and has seen success from the military to the government. If you feel your team is not working as efficiently as it can, could be time to give this one a read.

Shoe Dog

Voted the most popular book of 2024 for the Moonward book club, Shoe Dog is an extremely raw and vulnerable book that illustrates the many twists and turns that faced Phil Knight as he founded, built and went public with Nike. Genuinely, a fantastic read that will have you laughing with joy and at some parts crying with despair.

Favourite quote:

“The trees were dripping water. Everything was mist and fog. The world was thesame as it had always been the day before, as it had always been. Nothing hadchanged, least of all me. And yet I was worth $178 million.I showered, ate breakfast, drove to work. I was at my desk before anyone else.”

Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality

Serial restauranter, Danny Meyer discusses shares his rules for harnessing the power of hospitality in business. Drawing off his success from his many restaurants and cafes across America.

Be warned, do not read Setting the Table when you are hungry. It talks about food a lot.

The Energy Bus

The Energy Bus is super light hearted and easy to read. Although it can be a little cheesey in sections, sometimes you just need to read a book that exudes positivity. This book is inspired by the Law of Attraction, which outlines that the more you think about a certain thing (whether good or bad) the more likely it is going to happen to you. The Energy Bus really helps to realign your thinking, and get you back on track.

Can’t hurt me

Can't Hurt Me highlights the power of your mindset. Author David Goggins outlines his extreme life first as a Navy Seal and then as an ultra marathoner. If you can, we would recommend listening to this book as an audio -- it is done in a podcast style which provides extra insight.
